The LEAD17 Program, created by award-winning principal Dr. Melissa D. Hensley, is a comprehensive leadership development pathway designed specifically for aspiring and current assistant principals. Our goal is to equip school leaders with the skills, strategies, and confidence needed to excel in their current role and prepare for advancement to the principalship.

Through evidence-based coaching, real-world application, and collaborative learning, participants:

  • Strengthen instructional leadership and decision-making skills

  • Foster equitable, inclusive, and high-performing school environments

  • Translate leadership vision into measurable impact for students, staff, and the school community

Grounded in Dr. Hensley’s 2021 doctoral research, LEAD17 combines practical experience with proven leadership frameworks, ensuring participants develop the competencies necessary to lead with purpose and effectiveness.

Dr. Hensley has been recognized as Virginia Secondary Principal of the Year (2016), VASCD Leadership Award recipient (2022), and National Finalist for High School Principal of the Year (2016), among other honors.
