A Bit About Me
The LEAD17 Program, created by award-winning principal Dr. Melissa D. Hensley, is a comprehensive leadership development pathway designed specifically for aspiring and current assistant principals. Our goal is to equip school leaders with the skills, strategies, and confidence needed to excel in their current role and prepare for advancement to the principalship.

Grounded in Dr. Hensley’s 2021 doctoral research, LEAD17 combines practical experience with proven leadership frameworks, ensuring participants develop the competencies necessary to lead with purpose and effectiveness.

Dr. Hensley has been recognized as Virginia Secondary Principal of the Year (2016), VASCD Leadership Award recipient (2022), and National Finalist for High School Principal of the Year (2016), among other honors.

Principal Harrisonburg High School. Led the school to reduce the dropout rate from over 12% to 2.6% in June 2024. Harrisonburg High School is home to one of the most diverse student bodies in the Commonwealth.
Principal Central High School. Led the school to earn the National Blue Ribbon Award. This recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance. CHS demonstrates what can make an enduring, positive difference in students’ lives. Dr. Hensley was also instrumental in developing the LIFE Program to serve post-graduate students with disabilities in developing the skills to live independently and build a career in the work force.
Middle School Leadership Roles. Dr. Hensley served as the assistant principal at Signal Knob Middle School for 18 months before taking over as principal when her mentor and previous principal, Chuck Everett, retired.
