About the Course

The free introduction to LEAD 17: Engineering Your Leadership Legacy is designed as a high-impact entry point to move assistant principals (APs) from a reactive "firefighting" mindset to a proactive "leadership engineering" lens. This introductory experience, which can be delivered as a one-day initial workshop or a 14-Day Principal Readiness Challenge, focuses on the program's first pillar: Building a Leadership Legacy.

Key elements included in this free introduction are:

  • The Mindset Shift: Participants begin the transition from managing daily crises to intentional school design. This involves auditing current tasks to distinguish between reactive operations and proactive leadership.

  • Defining Your Leadership Narrative: Aspiring principals are guided through self-examination to clarify their "Leadership Why," pinpoint core values, and develop a personal philosophy that communicates their vision and impact.

  • Emotional Intelligence (EI) Mastery: Drawing from Goleman’s framework, the introduction emphasizes that EI fuels 80–90% of the competencies that distinguish exemplary leaders. Participants assess their self-awareness and relationship management skills to build an influential school culture.

  • Systems Thinking Foundations: Leaders learn to adopt a "Macroscopic View" of their organization. This includes utilizing the Iceberg Model to look beyond visible daily events and uncover the underlying structures and mental models that drive school behavior.

  • The 17-Inch Plate Platform: The session introduces the signature LEAD 17 metaphor, helping APs establish their "17-inch plate"—a foundation of non-negotiable leadership standards and cultural expectations that will guide every future decision.

  • PSEL Alignment & Strategic Portfolio: Participants start mapping their professional growth to the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL). This ensures their leadership legacy is validated by measurable impact, preparing them for the Administrative Job Search.

This introduction serves as the starting point for the LEAD 17 series, empowering "Upwardly Mobile" APs to build a scalable leadership platform and prepare for their transition to the principalship. Participants are encouraged to archive these initial takeaways in a physical three-inch binder, forming the foundation of their Next Level Leadership Playbook.
